Dominican surrealist Nercido Beltre ditches the dark machines and distorted figures for a more vibrant, colorful work. In this acrylic piece, a zipper opens to reveal a field of torn pink leaves. Atop this field, swirling wisps of grey and white hair surround an otherwise youthful feminine face, her large piercing eyes staring straight at the viewer. Though the woman’s mouth is obscured by a swirl of hair, a faint hint of a smile can be seen in the corner of her mouth. Even so, it is hard to get a read on her thoughts. Is she being flirty and mischievous? Shy and coy? Whatever thoughts she is having, the artist is looking at her as the remainder of his hope.
