This symbolism art piece is made with mixed acrylic and oil on a canvas. It is of a Taino bat. In the Taino culture, bats are associated with Hupias and it is said that they hide or sleep during the day and come out at night to eat guava fruit. A Hupia is the spirit of a person who has died. Hupias, as ghost spirits of those who died and the night, were feared and said to seduce women and kidnap people who ventured outside after dark. In this original piece of artwork, the bat is in a ritual which may be why there are music notes above and below its head. There are also other animals in this interesting work of art. A butterfly and what appears to be a lizard and a dog. The artist says, “Taino culture and autochthonous elements of the Caribbean”.
