Alexis Cruz was born in the National district of Santo Domingo in 1971. He studied at the National school of Fine Arts and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. While in school, he received multiple awards including First prize in Ancient drawing 1 and 2, landscape 1 and lithography. In 1996, he was recognized by the secretary of state for education for his activities in education, fine arts, and worship. He is inspired by the simplicity of the environment. As a child, he used to paint and draw cartoons and dolls, he was encouraged by a neighbor to enroll into the school of Fine Arts. He enjoys using oil on canvas because it gives him freedom that other techniques do not allow.
